CBD Tinctures or Softgels: A guide to choosing the right product

Hemp derived CBD tinctures and softgels both have a place in your personal apothecary. However, it is important to understand the key differences between the two, based on your personal needs and preferences. The following is a brief overview of what to consider when choosing between a CBD tincture or softgel.

Lou CBD Tinctures

Louisville CBD Company tinctures are derived from organically grown hemp using a CO2 extraction process that removes cannabinoids and terpenes from hemp and condenses them into phytocannabinoid rich hemp oil. A CO2 extraction process produces a hemp oil that is free of harmful solvents and chemicals.

Our hemp oil is then diluted by another carrier oil to create a specific concentration of cannabinoids, resulting in either our 500 mg Tincture and 1000 mg Tincture. In our tinctures, we combine hemp oil with grapeseed oil, which we believe provides a subtle flavor and high product stability.

Our unique extraction process creates a hemp oil tincture that is free of THC, the psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. Once the THC is removed, we’re left with an oil that is prominently CBD, in addition to other cannabinoids and terpenes that amplify the effects of the CBD on the endocannabinoid system. Our THC-Free product is not to be confused with a CBD Isolate. CBD Isolate only contains CBD and no other cannabinoids or terpenes that contribute to the effectiveness of CBD.

Using a CBD tincture

Tinctures are taken by using a dropper to place CBD oil under the tongue. The tincture is held under the tongue for 30-60 seconds and then swallowed. While held under the tongue, CBD is absorbed through the soft tissue of the mouth and into the bloodstream. When the tincture is swallowed, unabsorbed cannabinoids enter the system through the digestive tract.

Tinctures are superior to softgels in regard to the rate at which CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream. When using our tinctures, you can expect to feel the effects more quickly than when using a CBD softgel. For this reason, tinctures are great in situations when you want CBD to act quickly. Another attribute of tinctures is the ability to vary the dosage of CBD. Our softgels come in a pill form that delivers 25 mg of CBD per pill, while tinctures allow the user more minutely vary how much CBD they use.

Lou CBD Softgels

Like our tinctures, Lou CBD softgels are THC-Free but remain rich in CBD along with other cannabinoids and terpenes. From an ingredient standpoint, they are very similar to our tinctures but the delivery method is very different.

Our softgels provide CBD in a water soluble form. The phytocannabinoid rich hemp oil, derived from the same process as described above, goes through another process that reduces the particle size of the oil. This results in water soluble cannabinoid emulsion droplets that are 10-50 nanometers in size.

Other products on the market use a similar process that results in a CBD that is 100-5000 nanometers in size, which is still very small compared to the size of standard oils but much larger than the droplet size of our CBD products. The reduction in size of the droplets changes the way that the CBD and other compounds are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Differences between CBD tinctures and softgels

The benefit of taking a CBD softgel with nano-sized water soluble droplets is that the absorption into the bloodstream is much higher than a tincture. The peak CBD level in the bloodstream when taking our softgels can be as much as 3-5 times higher than a similar dosage of CBD tincture.

The drawback, however, to using a softgel is that the effects may take much longer to be felt. The softgels rely more on digestion to control the rate of delivery, which will vary greatly from person to person. For this reason, CBD softgels may not deliver the effects of CBD on the timeline you desire if you are looking for fast relief. We recommend softgels for people who struggle with sleep or for those looking for management of less acute symptoms.

How do I decide?

Personally, I use both of these products. Softgels provide me long term relief from soreness due to weightlifting. But, I love tinctures when I am feeling a bit anxious or desire relaxation after long hours at work. Both products provide great benefit but it is important to understand the difference in how they perform. To that end, you can expect a high quality product regardless of which you choose when purchasing from Louisville CBD Company.
